This program is open to all students in Carefree and Cave Creek, Arizona and surrounding areas who have the desire to learn. We have been working with the Town of Carefree which has been allowing us the use of the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion for rehearsals. The effectiveness of this program is demonstrated at the end of each semester through recitals and performances in Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona.
Jubilate Conservatory of Music classes are traditional. Recitals are small and intimate with a focus on communication. During a student’s violin, cello, and piano lessons, Jubilate teaches the fundamentals of music theory and reading music as well as performance techniques. These performances indicate and showcase student growth and improvement. Video recordings from our last semester of student accomplishments may be viewed on our website at www.jubilateconservatoryofmusic.org under “Programs”.
Students who studied at JCM will enter schools as solid musicians, as a result of violin, cello, and piano lessons, capable of communicating with others in an inclusive wholesome way, ready to relate with others through music. This allows music directors to begin operating at more sophisticated levels in their programs. It also paves the way for orchestra and symphonic band returning to the school systems as students arrive ready to perform.
Our program is structured utilizing four levels of competence. We teach toddlers, who learn to match pitch in Level 1, through Level 4, high school; where students prepare for auditions to apply for college scholarships utilizing their musical abilities. Students are evaluated by teachers as they move through these levels. Students benefiting from violin, cello, and piano lessons, who have graduated from our program have gone on to play in music groups, bands, and colleges in Carefree and Cave Creek, Arizona and surrounding areas.

The Challice Method of Music is written for all levels to perform together at the same time. The pieces are orchestrated in such a way as allowing teachers to focus on different aspects of string playing and different levels of players at the same time. The purpose of this music is to engage students in the extremely satisfying process of group activity. The music is simple to allow students to focus on a group pulse and to develop the ability to listen to the other parts as they play their own. These simple repetitive parts become challenging when students are asked to alter their dynamics or bow strokes and still follow the beat.
Playing this music, students develop the ability to play with others from the onset. Communicating with the language of music as a group is often overlooked and misunderstood by beginning level students. Given this understanding and ability to engage from the beginning, students are less likely to drop out in the early stages of their musical study.
Taking violin, cello, and piano lessons at Jubilate Conservatory of Music as an adult allows for individualized lessons, the opportunity for musical growth, and the ability to play with the musical community. This strengthens students’ desire to practice and enjoy meeting like-minded musicians.

A little bit about our instruction technique, the Challice Method, implemented in our violin, cello, and piano lessons as well as instructing viola, organ, drums, voice, and recorder. The Challice Method of Music Instruction is based on the one room style of teaching rooted in the early part of the development of this country. All levels are present and learning simultaneously in this approach giving students many positive aspects of learning not available in grade level instruction. We offer the Challice Method of Music instruction for violin, cello, and piano lessons as well as viola, organ, drums, voice, and recorder.
The Challice Method of Music is written for all levels to perform together at the same time. The pieces are orchestrated in such a way as to allow teachers to focus on different aspects of playing and different levels of players at the same time. The purpose of this music is to engage students in the extremely satisfying
process of group activity. The music is simple to allow students to focus on a group pulse and to develop the ability to listen to the other parts and musicians as they play their own part. These simple repetitive parts become challenging when students are asked to alter their dynamics or bow strokes and still follow
the beat. These can be most effectively implemented during group violin, cello, and piano lessons.
Playing this music, students develop the ability to play with others from the onset. Communicating with the language of music as a group is often overlooked and misunderstood by beginning level students. Given this understanding and ability to engage from the beginning, students are less likely to drop out in the early stages of their musical study.
We welcome families to come join our music classes located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ. Again, in addition to offering violin, cello, and piano lessons, we offer viola, organ, drums, voice, and recorder lessons. We think your children will enjoy our professional, relaxed environment!
The primary purpose of Jubilate Conservatory of Music, a school of classical study for children and young adults, is to strengthen the hearts and minds of our youth. We see classical music as a language; using the language of music as a tool to communicate and unify each other, and to communicate artistic expression.
Laya Field, a retired musician, began volunteering at Christ Anglican Church in Carefree, Arizona in 2007. Her mission was to start a children’s choir that would sing at services once a month. Very quickly she realized that there was a need for musical instruction for children in the community. The Jubilate program began with a few students learning to match pitch on Saturdays.
Located north of Phoenix, in Cave Creek, and Carefree, Arizona, Jubilate Conservatory of Music is working to create a strong atmosphere of team players whose sole agenda is to enhance the lives of children. Jubilate Conservatory of Music was founded in 2008 and became a 501(c)(3) in 2019 and has created a healthy environment where teachers are paid well and treated with respect, and students learn to improve their musical skills in an atmosphere of encouragement which is tempered with regard for others, relating to classmates with kindness through music.
Jubilate Conservatory of Music provides violin, cello, and piano lessons. Additionally, we provide viola, recorder, voice, choir, and percussion lessons. Ours is a classical approach, teaching the full language of music: reading, writing, and the technique of musical communication.
The method taught at Jubilate is a blending of styles, with a predominance of the teachings of Kato Havas. The Havas method of teaching is focused on releasing tension and anxiety, while encouraging joy in musicianship. Our focus is on technique and reading music. We are not concerned about impressing others, but rather to enjoy playing music with fellow students.
Performances are orchestral, with an emphasis on harmony, as opposed to melody. In this way we encourage teamwork through listening to others, developing the ability to focus, and learning to follow a conductor. Jubilate provides after school classes and Saturday Music classes, which are free courses of study during Spring and Fall Semesters. Our classrooms are located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ. All age groups are welcome.
Curriculum at Jubilate Conservatory includes ear training, sight singing, harmonization, music reading, music theory, and the technical mastery of voice or instrument. These are woven into our curriculum as we teach violin, cello, and piano lessons. Our intention is to guide students into an understanding of the language of music and thereby, a course of self-study through the creative process which also supports music in our community. Our classes include public, private, homeschool, and special needs students. We work to include the Cave Creek community and
surrounding areas.
Composition is a key component of our curriculum. Our students, along with music instructors, are taught music theory and how to compose their own classical music pieces using traditional methods. Many perform their written works at recitals or at our annual Composers in Concert Event, held in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ.
At our annual Composer’s Concert, we regularly invite members of our community and local talent to participate and to also come to listen to a professional string quartet perform our students’ written pieces. During their violin, cello, and piano lessons, many of our students write beyond their own performance capability and learn how to transpose and present music to professional musicians for performance.
During the Composer’s Concert, students can listen, take notes, and make the necessary changes to their music pieces. In addition, students listening to their compositions played professionally expands their understanding of their own capability, and the creative process. The teachers at Jubilate have found students attending this concert are encouraged to strive for excellence and continue their musical process.
One of our students has been writing music for about five years, and has been writing increasingly more sophisticated music, interesting for both the listener and performers, employing a method we use at Jubilate called ‘talking violins’. This student wasn’t aware of how important this method was until she heard her piece being played at our annual Composer’s Concert.
Our violin, cello, and piano lesson instructors have found that a student’s growth and sense of accomplishment inspire even more creativity and development. Furthermore, Composers Concerts are attended by beginning students who are inspired and encouraged to become more engaged with their instruments. Throughout students’ violin, cello, and piano lessons, instructors have noticed when students are troubled, those who compose and become absorbed in music, have helped them become more resilient through difficult family times.
One of the ideas we want to accomplish at Jubilate is to set up a website for students and instructors to sell their own written compositions. We believe this will help students and teachers to communicate with others, motivate themselves and learn through exercising the undertaking of composing and copyrighting their works. Since Jubilate is physically located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ, such a website will be an efficient way for students and instructors to share their compositions worldwide. It is also a great way for students taking violin, cello, and piano lessons to generate income while studying music. Our desire is to educate our students and instructors, who write their own sophisticated classical compositions, teaching them how to copyright their own pieces, and to sell those pieces, generating their own
income.
Located in Cave Creek, and Carefree, AZ, Jubilate Conservatory of Music has expanded to include classes in Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano, Voice, Recorder, Percussion, Choir, Orchestra (various levels), Music Theory, Music Composition, and a Summer Intensive Workshop.
Laya Field has been working to create an inclusive program comprising young children to adults. To accommodate all ages and abilities, Jubilate Conservatory of Music classes take place at the Jubilate Main School in the Spanish Village Shopping Center at 7211 E. Ho Road, Suite 24 in Carefree, AZ and the Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek.

Classical music is a universal language, one that connects us, fosters unity, and offers a profound means of artistic expression. Our students achieve this through violin, cello, and piano lessons in addition to a variety of other instruments and voice.
Here’s a little bit of information about our instruction technique, the Challice Method, came about:Laya Challice Field studied music at Humboldt State University in Northern California with a double major in voice and violin. Her private studies in violin included teachers Helen Payne, Floyd Glende, Roy Mann, Louis Krasner, and Kato Havas. Her operatic studies were primarily spent with Mezzo Soprano, Blanche Thebom, in San Francisco.
Laya sang community opera and oratorio in the 1980s. Some of her favorite roles at that time were: Baba in “The Medium” by Menotti; Dinah in “Trouble in Tahiti” by Bernstein; The Mother Superior in “Dialogue of the Carmelites” by Poulenc; Suzuki in “Madame Butterfly” by Puccini; and Zita in “Gianni Schicci” by Puccini.
Her vocal instruction included the art of teaching as well as singing the Bel Canto method taught by Blanche Thebom which comes from the line of teachers through Pauline Viardot, daughter of the Bel Canto Master Manuel Garcia the Elder and his wife, Josephine Garcia. This technique is very different from the method described and instructed by their son, Manuel Garcia II, who developed the laryngoscope and focused on a more scientific approach to singing. As the focal point is very high and forward in this technique, it is safe for young voices.
Laya's foundation as a voice teacher rests in her belief that anyone can sing. “Unless there is a serious impairment in a person’s hearing, they can be taught to both sing in tune and sing with expression.” Laya has instructed students privately, in schools and in churches and found that this is absolutely true in her experience.
Laya’s approach to teaching strings primarily stems from the teachings of Kato Havas, her main influence on teaching violin. This approach emphasizes both psychological and physical freedom. It is a method of teaching brought forward by Kato Havas, and has its roots in Hungarian gypsy violin, combined with the instruction Kato received at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest.
When teaching violin, viola, or cello lessons, Laya’s approach rests in the understanding that the language of music is an expression of joy. "When a student loves their instrument, is at ease with their classmates, and is not concerned about impressing others, they can effectively grow and mature and become a peaceful, competent musician. This means that they will be able to look forward to a lifelong experience of creating joyful music with others, which is our main goal at Jubilate Conservatory of Music." We applaud the achievements of our fellow musicians and strive to do our best within our own level of understanding. By working together and holding the focus of our musical endeavors within ourselves, rather than with external competition, we avoid developing an unhealthy concept of excellence which drives us apart from others.

Jubilate Conservatory of Music offers classes in Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona. Classes throughout the week are held at Jubilate Conservatory of Music Main Music School in the Historic Spanish Village Shopping Center in Carefree AZ, 7211 East Ho Road, Suite 24, Carefree, AZ 84877. Select classes on Saturdays are held at the Main Music School and the Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek AZ, 38443 N School House Rd, Cave Creek, AZ 85331.
One of the most beautiful achievements in the study of music is mastery of “The Language of Music.” The musician who has reached this level of expertise, whereby music in its entirety is owned, will enjoy musical communication with others their entire life. This level includes the development of the ability to read and analyze musical compositions with ease.
Jubilate Conservatory of Music, located in Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona, has confidently addressed this issue through our proprietary instruction methods for violin, cello, and piano lessons. JCM has also expanded instruction to include voice, guitar, and percussion. There are many ways to approach music instruction and also various styles of learning. Most teachers employ multiple approaches simultaneously to facilitate the needs of students and cover the vast topic of music.
Teaching music by rote is where the teacher demonstrates the music to be learned, note by note, as the student mimics and memorizes it in a step-by-step way. It is particularly useful when time is of the essence, or if the material being discussed or studied must be learned before the discussion can take place. This method of teaching is becoming increasingly predominant today. YouTube videos are based on this method. It is a tempting approach for a teacher, as students appear to be making very rapid progress, but the results of a “rote only” education are musically crippling.
Students will readily engage in this method as the demand for focus and concentration to read music is completely set aside. Students who become comfortable with rote learning will resist a teacher who is requiring conscious learning.
Onlookers may initially be impressed with someone who can play Chopin so forcefully but will later become confused to find that this is all the student can play and that playing with others is out of the question. The musician who suffers from “rote only” learning will often feel shame and loss as others expect more than they can deliver.
Music illiteracy is a form of imprisonment for a musician and the loss of a child’s formative years attending to the study of the “Language of Music” is tragic, as it creates musical isolation and prevents musical communication with others. Located in beautiful Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ, and through JCM’s proprietary music instruction in violin, cello, and piano lessons, we eliminate musical illiteracy and set our students up for success in music.
At JCM, our instructors teacher resist the temptation to teach by rote and stick to a traditional approach, teaching theory and note reading simultaneously, risk chastisement as their students will move at a seemingly slower pace during violin, cello, and piano lessons. These children, however, learn to become true musicians who will be capable of musical communication with others. Violin, cello, and piano lessons are taught by instructors at Jubilate Conservatory of Music, located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ to prepare students for a lifetime of joyful interaction with others with the “Language of Music” in all its beauty, insight, and profundity. This requires patience, work, cooperation, commitment and respect for others. The benefits of this endeavor are well worth the effort.
The Challice Method of Music Instruction is based on the one room style of teaching rooted in the early part of the development of this country. All levels are present and learning simultaneously in this approach, giving students many positive aspects of learning not available in grade level instruction.
Older students become role models for younger students during violin, cello, and piano lessons. They see themselves as having an important role socially in this model which keeps them motivated to continue learning ahead of younger students. These students eventually become mentors for the beginning level students providing comfort for beginners taking violin, cello and piano lessons, who can otherwise become intimidated by older more proficient students in a music school.
In this setting, younger students can learn on many more levels, even subconsciously, by hearing what is going on with older students. Matching pitch, for instance, develops on its own with little instruction if students enter classes at a young age.
The Challice Method of Music, instructed at Jubilate Conservatory of Music, located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ, is written for all levels to perform together at the same time. The pieces are orchestrated in such a way as allowing teachers to focus on different aspects of string playing and different levels of players at the same time. The purpose of this music is to engage students in the extremely satisfying process of group activity. These simple repetitive parts become challenging when students are asked to alter their dynamics or bow strokes and still follow the beat.
At JCM, located in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ, students develop the ability to play with others from the onset. Communicating with the language of music as a group is often overlooked and misunderstood by beginning level students. Given this understanding and ability to engage from the beginning, students are less likely to drop out in the early stages of their musical study.

A Summer Intensive for Children, The School of Musical Fish, was held at Spirit in the Desert Retreat in Carefree, Arizona from June 17th through June 20th, 2024.
The 2024 Jubilate Conservatory of Music Summer Intensive was a wonderful success for everyone involved. In addition to violin, cello, and piano lessons, Jubilate also hosted a fun and instructive Summer Intensive! Thirty students enrolled to work at a very fast pace, learning dialogue, blocking, and music which included a student string ensemble and band consisting of students four to eleven years old. The colorful set of The School of Musical Fish was constructed by students, teachers, and parents. Although the intensive was focused on fun, students learned a great deal in only three days, culminating in a beautiful performance on the fourth day of class.
The purpose of this intense course was to teach students the benefits of a focused effort and personal practice. The secondary purpose of the intensive was to provide students with an experience of music immersion. Five teachers and one teaching assistant were involved in this complex children’s musical set under the sea. Students worked together to help each other memorize lines as well as friendships. It was a beautifully coordinated effort with honest intention on the part of everyone participating. All who attended interacted in a positive way and created a musical performance complete with its own orchestra.
Our Summer Intensive was underwritten through a generous donation by Kiwanis of Carefree, AZ. Kiwanis has continued to be a vital support to our students and to the growth of JCM. In addition, seven children were given scholarships through Jubilate Conservatory of Music. They would not otherwise have been able to attend. Close to fifty people came to our performance to support the young musicians. Our purpose was for all participants to come together as a community. The result was a wonderful experience for everyone!
Here’s what parents had to say about the 2024 Summer Intensive:

“Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for our two young daughters ages 8 and 5. My older daughter is very musical and plays piano and sings and my younger is about to start piano and vocals, I am also hoping my oldest will commence violin with Jubilate. This experience has been a blessing to our family. I am extremely grateful to Laya and her team for all the instruction and assistance in the field of musical theater, singing and instruments as neither my husband nor I are musical.”

Throughout the year, Jubilate Conservatory of Music students of all ages and skill levels collaborate with their teachers to craft original works, showcased at our annual Composers in Concert performances. Jubilate recently hosted our Composers in Concert event in November. We had seven Jubilate Conservatory of Music students submit their pieces to be performed by professional string quartet. The Sicong Chen String Quartet gave a heartfelt interpretation of these young composers’ works. Professional quartets have included the Wipff Quartet, the Luo, and the Evans Quartet. Our annual Composers Concert is a way for students to listen to their own written works played professionally and for parents and community to enjoy and understand their students’ amazing progress. Students also performed their own written works on piano and with voice. A wonderful time was had afterwards, mingling with student composers and professional musicians alike.
In addition, Jubilate Conservatory of Music has performed in a number of activities in Cave Creek and Carefree, AZ, including the annual Earth Day Celebration, Kiwanis Christmas events, performances at the Sanderson Lincoln Ford Pavillion in Carefree, as well as our own recitals.
